Thursday Think Tank: On Civility

"Being considerate of others will take your children further in life than any college degree." ~Marian Wright Edelman

I saw this quote on Twitter yesterday, and it truly spoke to me. For many, many different reasons. It's really all I want to say today, though I would encourage everyone who stops by to leave their response to these words, and share them with others.

  1. It's a great quote and one of the things I have tried very hard to apply in my own life and share with my children.

  2. Thanks for stopping by, Andi. I love knowing that other moms are as dedicated to bringing their children up to have these sorts of values as I am. It's encouraging. :)

  3. It's definitely one of the values I try to live by, and try to instill in my kids. I'm never sure how good a job I'm doing, but I try.

    1. The things we never attempt will surely never happen. The things we do attempt, however, may.

  4. My parents did try very hard to teach me to be civil to others; unfortunately I have a very short/foul temper and I don't always step back and think about what I say or do. I try to be civil; I'm just very aware that I don't always succeed.

    1. I don't think civility means that we don't get mad... I just think it means when we get mad we don't denigrate into calling folks ugly names, and we try to stay on topic, and when we get too angry to stay on topic to respectfully bow out of the conversation. And sometimes, it just means apologizing with integrity after we cool off from being too angry to do any those things.
